Starting a Business During COVID-19
The journey of launching Mulder Consulting, LLC during the height of COVID-19 was shaped by challenges, self-reflection, and a reimagined work-life balance. From navigating the complexities of the pandemic to embracing the opportunities it created, this story offers a glimpse into the motivations and values that drive this business.
Read on to discover the inspiration behind Mulder Consulting and the vision for a brighter, more sustainable future.
At the end of March 2021, I launched Mulder Consulting, LLC with the goal of being a very part-time consultant this summer to spend time with my five-year-old daughter and our family.
Like so many other people can relate to, I’d spent the first five years of her life either commuting to an office or locked up in our makeshift home office five days a week, and some weekends. My husband was the loyal stay-at-home parent who went with my last-minute business travel plans, strange hours, taught our daughter everything she needed to know, and then got her through drop-offs and pick-ups at day care and finally through Zoom Preschool (4K) during a worldwide pandemic.
As a career-focused person, this is what I was supposed to do, right? This was the path we’ve all been told is leading us to prosperity. But, at what cost? The things we gave up having my husband stay home weren’t really missed, but come 2020, we were both looking forward to having her start real preschool (4K) full-time. Even with COVID we had hoped it might happen—daytimes where we could go into an office or at least work from home, alone, quietly.
But as we all learned in 2020, that wasn’t meant to be and we needed to readjust. We felt so very fortunate for my industry, colleagues, and our position in the world that helped us get through the beginning of COVID-19. Because as of today, more than 620,000 Americans have died and “Globally, as of 9:42am CEST, 23 August 2021, there have been 211,373,303 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4,424,341 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 20 August 2021, a total of 4,562,256,778 vaccine doses have been administered.”
620,000 Americans and 4.5 million worldwide…and counting.
As I push aside my fears of the Delta variant so that my daughter can finally have some normalcy and friends in kindergarten this fall (my husband and I just dropped her off this morning, in the rain, and it is exhilarating and scary), I am looking at six straight hours of uninterrupted work time in the middle of the day. 6 straight hours! Something I haven’t had in more than a year, and let’s face it, likely since my daughter was born. And I’m ready to get back to work.
It’s all so exciting and daunting all at the same time, especially since the bulk of the work is my responsibility now. No business development department or dedicated staff to drive business and assign work to me. No marketing intern to show me the latest TikTok dance (because this is one social platform I’m not sure I can get into), no IT department to recover a document I’d worked on for hours and then plays the disappearing act, no one creating invoices for me to just review and sign, and no one but me to pay for insurance or networking opportunities.
The truth of the matter is, and the reason why I left the relative comfort of the corporate world is: Mulder Consulting has given me the opportunity to really understand what I want to do in my career, the impact I want to have in this world, and the types of people I want to work with.
People like you if you’re reading this. People whose 9-5 job (and 24-hour job) is to better the world, the environment, and either directly or indirectly fight Climate Change. People that actually want to read the “AR6 Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis” full report (or if not the full 1300? pages, at least the Technical Summary or the Summary for Policymakers—which are each less than 200 and 100 pages respectively in case you’re interested).
My services are strategic marketing solutions. My superpower is translating complex information through partnerships with technical and creative teams.
I’m looking to create professional partnerships with organizations led by diverse business owners and team members, knowing that superior results come from teams with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
